Sustainable Living and Volunteering: Celia`s Experience with EKOenergy in Helsinki — Interview

Why did you choose this specific European Solidarity Corps project and Helsinki, Finland?

Celia: I’ve always been drawn to the culture of Northern Europe and felt it would be a great match for my personality.

My original plan was to move to Copenhagen with my best friend.

However, while browsing the European Solidarity Corps page, I stumbled upon the EKOenergy project. The more I looked into it, the more it seemed to align perfectly with my interests. To my delight, I was accepted and able to start sooner than expected. So, for now, Copenhagen will have to wait!

How do you implement sustainability in your personal life? What tips do you have for others looking to live more sustainably?

Celia: I still have so much to learn, but I am more cautious with the food I consume and try to purchase second-hand items or invest in products that have a long utility lifespan (quality versus quantity).

For example, I buy second-hand books or borrow from the library, and I exchange clothes with my sisters and friends before deciding to donate them. Lately, I have been learning a lot about the unsustainable aspects of traveling (one of my biggest hobbies) and have been trying to find different alternatives that consider the climate. In this area, I feel there is still so much to learn.

How did you get involved with Friday for Future movement? What event or realization prompted your involvement?

Celia: Mainly since I started volunteering at EKOenergy, I’ve become more involved. I heard a lot about FFF when it started, but I only joined a couple of times and wouldn’t say I was really active back then.

Now it feels different. Since I’ve been educating myself more and doing it with my fellow volunteers and colleagues at EKOenergy, I find it more doable and fun.

What are your thoughts on Greta Thunberg’s role in the climate movement? How has she inspired you and your activism?

Celia: I have recently started to learn more about Greta’s role.

I find her actions inspiring and her words simple but effective.

She has definitely inspired my activism because she is younger than me and has broader knowledge. I also appreciate that she doesn’t sugarcoat the crisis that is currently taking place.

What role do you believe young people play in combating climate change?

Celia:I would say it is an important issue because they will suffer more intensely from the consequences, and their words are often ignored due to a perceived lack of experience.

How do you envision reflecting on your experiences with the Friday for Future movement?

Celia: I want to live by my values and not be easily persuaded by the next shiny thing, prioritizing the long term over the short term.

What are the future goals of Friday for Future? Are there any specific projects or initiatives you are focusing on?

Celia: Today (07/06/2024), the main focus was on the EU elections, as they play an important role in shaping the future we will inhabit.
